Importance of Land

Not only in our Novel Cry the Beloved Country. The importance of land was a necessity. In the beginning of the book it talked about two kinds of land. The first land that was lush and prosperous because the need for the land was not demanding. The land took care of the people and the people took care of the land. The second described land was barren and dry. You could not walk on the ground without shoes and the land did not take care of the people because the people did not take care of it. In our day there are a lot of people working hard to restore the land of South Africa. There are many research projects and laws being passed to protect the land that belongs to the South Africans. This article in the comment section explains some projects that are being done to help Africans.

  1. SA has spent R8 bln on land reform November 13 2010 , 11:29:00

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has spent R8 billion thus far on their land reform programme. The department has taken up 4 214 projects since 2001. The projects range from land acquisition for sustainable settlement, for agricultural development and for production of food.

Beyond the 4 214 projects the department has also taken up 734 projects for the restitution programme. The restitution programme deals with claims relating to the dispossession of land, financial compensation for the dispossessed among other things.

This project has cost the department R12 billion so far. Land restitution is one of the thorny issues in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Thulas Nxesi, is expected to give the Ribungwane community outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo about R9 million in financial compensation for their land. The community with 182 beneficiaries claimed back the land through government's land redistribution programme in 1998. They were forcefully removed during the apartheid era. Each family will receive R54 000.

  2. In the book, the land is extremely important because the people of south Africa love and work in it. They are experiencing one of the worst droughts their country has had had. The people go to school to learn how to farm and take care of their land but somehow still they don't take care of it. In this article it talks about how the government of South Africa is giving back money to people for land that has been taken away one way or another. It also talks about how the government is doing projects for land acquisition and agricultural development. This relates to the book because these South Africans care and want the land they deserve. The land is meaningful in both situation because the land takes care of the South African families and if they did not have it they would not prosper.

  3. Element:Napoleon Letsitsi
Napoleon letsitsi was an agriculture man in the novel and he helped to restore the land of Ndotsheni. Napoleon was hired by James Jarvis to help the people in Ndotsheni. This young man was full of energy and could not wait to see the land restored. He almost got too caught up the work. Kumalo had to remind him in one instance that everyone needs each other even when someone or a group of people have become self sufficient again. I think that Alan Paton used the personality of this young energetic Agriculture man to show that there are people in South Africa that are fighting and willing to help change come to pass.
